CHESTERTON | Dunes Learning Center and the National Park Service will offer a one-day workshop titled "Geology Road Trip" with Ken Schoon, local educator, geologist and author on Feb. 16. The day will begin at 9 a.m. with a review of Calumet Area geology, including the formation of Lake Michigan, and end eight hours and many miles later.
Participants will board a bus for a memorable tour of bedrock, glacial lakes, and three ancient shorelines that were formed by the lake since the end of the Ice Age. Schoon will point out ancient dune ridges, interesting sites and natural landmarks, combining geology, geography and history while traversing the countryside.
The program will begin and end at Dunes Learning Center, 700 Howe Road, Chesterton. Lunch and a copy of Schoon's book, "Calumet Beginnings," will be provided.
A registration fee of $60 covers lunch and materials. Indiana teachers can receive continuing renewal units, and Illinois teachers can receive continuing education units for participating in the workshop. Advance registration is required and registration is limited. Register online at www.duneslearningcenter.org or call Dunes Learning Center at (219) 395-9555.
