CHESTERTON | A Chesterton man was taken to a hospital Monday after police said he struck an off-duty police officer’s car while the officer was checking on him.
Police said the officer told dispatchers he was checking on a man slumped over the wheel of his Ford Expedition on Eighth Street at the CSX Railroad tracks in Chesterton.
As the officer was checking on him, the man’s Expedition struck the officer’s car.
Police said the man was disoriented and unable to answer questions.
EMS crews arrived and took him to a hospital. As he was removed from his car, police found a glass pipe in the driver's seat.
The man later told police he stopped for a train, put his head down and the next thing he remembered was hitting the officer’s car.
He told police he smoked synthetic marijuana in the past, but insisted he hadn’t smoked it for several days.
Police said he passed all field sobriety tests. Chesterton police will forward information to the prosecutor who will decide whether to bring charges.
