CHESTERTON | Matthew Cady couldn't wait to share the news of his Make-A-Wish request with his classmates.
Matthew, 8, a third-grader at Bailly Elementary School, and his classmates were treated to balloons and cake Thursday afternoon as Make-A-Wish volunteers Triecia and Bobby Roberts granted Matthew his wish.
He and his family will be leaving Sunday for a Disney Cruise in Florida.
Matthew's mother, Tracy Cady, had a difficult time talking to his classmates as she was holding back tears explaining to the children why Matthew got a wish.
"Matthew wanted to celebrate his special day with teachers, friends and classmates," Tracy Cady said.
Cady explained that Matthew has Moyamoya, a rare blood vessel disorder that causes blood flow to the brain to become blocked, and this can cause mini-strokes and high blood pressure.
"Matthew has already had two surgeries and that is why he is with us today," she said. "That's why he has those scars on his head."
Matthew will be going on the trip with his mother, her boyfriend, Brian Jesse, and Matthew's older brother, Nathan, 12, who also has Moyamoya.
"Nathan was diagnosed first, at age 7 and he also has had two surgeries," Cady said. "When Matthew started having the same symptoms (headache and nausea) we had him tested and sure enough he has Moyamoya, also."
Cady said she is thrilled about the cruise.
"It will be great to see Matthew happy on this cruise and just experiencing all the fun," she said.
Matthew is looking forward to the trip. And he is excited to ride in a limo, which will take them to the airport.
"I just want to have fun and meet Mickey Mouse," Matthew said. "I'm glad my class could hear the good news and I knew they would like it."
