CHESTERTON | A Michigan man who stopped for a meal in Chesterton was accused of causing problems at local restaurants and then tried running from police.
Adam Bierlein, 46, of Battle Creek, Mich., faces charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement.
Chesterton police were called about 6:15 p.m. Saturday to Gelsosomo’s Pizza on Indian Boundary Road where employees said Bierlein was harassing the staff.
Police said he left restaurant before they arrived and had run toward other fast food restaurants in the area.
A woman flagged down officers saying he was a student at Kellogg University and was with a group of students who had been in Chicago and were on their way back to Michigan.
Police then learned he was inside Arby’s restaurant ordering food. When police called his name, he ran out of the restaurant and across a parking lot. Police said he stopped only when he realized there were officers in front of and behind him.
Police said he became uncooperative and began to yell that officers were violating his civil rights.
Officers told him they would put him back on his bus if he cooperated, but he continued to shout profanities at the officers.
Bierlein was arrested and continued to be aggressive with officers while en route to the Porter County Jail.
According to police, he actions escalated at the jail where he was shocked with a Taser.
