CHESTERTON | A 25-year-old Michigan City woman was charged with drunken driving after police said she caused a head-on collision on U.S. 20 early Saturday morning.
Police said Carolyn Kelly told officers she was texting when the accident happened.
According to police, Kelly was driving a 2011 Honda Civic about 1:16 a.m. Saturday westbound on U.S. 20 around Harrison Road when she crossed the center line and struck head-on a 2012 Honda Accord driven by Dale Hiteman, 57, of LaPorte.
Kelly was taken by ambulance to the Chesterton campus of St. Anthony Hospital complaining of pain to her abdomen. Hiteman suffered a sprained wrist, but refused medical treatment.
At the hospital, Kelly's blood was drawn and her blood alcohol concentration registered .103. The legal limit is .08.
Kelly was charged with felony operating while intoxicated and cited for driving left of center and texting while driving.
