CHESTERTON | A Liberty Township man was arrested Tuesday on a public intoxication charge after an altercation with a youth soccer coach, Chesterton police said.
Shortly after 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, officers were called to the parking lot at the Dogwood Park soccer fields on South 23rd Street, where a man was arguing with a youth soccer coach, police said.
An officer approached the pair and John Michalik, 54, of Liberty Township, began yelling at him, police said. Michalik said he was telling a child how to kick a ball after he was forced to stop hitting golf balls when the youth league arrived, police said.
Michalik smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech and watery eyes, police said. When questioned, Michalik said he drank four glasses of wine while hitting balls, police said.
Michalik failed a series of field sobriety tests and had a blood alcohol content of 0.24, police said.
