Police in two communities are looking for a woman who allegedly stole cigarettes from three gas stations Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Both Chesterton and Portage police are looking for a woman, in her 20s or early 30s, about 5-foot, 5-inches tall with blond hair. She left each of the incidents in an older model red station wagon type vehicle. Police believe someone else was driving the vehicle.
The first incident happened about 7:48 p.m. Monday when the woman entered the Family Express at 1681 Pioneer Trail, Chesterton requesting to purchase two cartons of cigarettes. When her debit card didn't work, she grabbed the cigarettes and left.
At 11:22 p.m., the woman entered the Speedway at 752 Indian Boundary Road in Chesterton, requested two more cartons of cigarettes and then left with the cigarettes when her credit card wouldn't work in the reader.
The third incident happened at 12:09 a.m. Tuesday at the Family express, 6250 AmeriPlex Drive, Portage. There, according to the report, she again asked for two cartons of cigarettes. The store did not have full cartons and the cashier placed 11 packs on the counter. Again, her credit card did not work properly, and the woman fled from the store.
In total, the cigarettes stolen from the three stores were valued at about $300.
