CHESTERTON | A Valparaiso police officer working a special drug trafficking patrol recovered marijuana and a large amount of cash during a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 94.
Officer Jason Hamilton was working a special High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area patrol, which is paid for by a federal grant and targets drug trafficking along interstates in Porter County.
According to police, Hamilton stopped a westbound car for speeding on I-94 near Ind. 49. Police said the driver, Jean Marie Peek, 26, of Flint, Mich., was driving on a suspended license. A passenger in the vehicle was identified as Yong Sok Padgett, 66, of Grand Blanc, Mich.
Police said Peek and Padgett gave different stories about their travel plans. A Chesterton police officer and police dog were called to the traffic stop. Police said the dog indicated there were drugs in the car. Police searched the vehicle and found marijuana and more than $56,000 in cash hidden inside a pillow.
Peek and Padgett were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. The cash was seized by police.
