Plaque stolen from veteran's grave at St. Patrick's Cemetery
CHESTERTON | A Porter resident reported to police here Wednesday morning that someone had stolen the name plate from her husband's headstone.
The bronze plaque read "PFC. Thomas P. Nellessen Vietnam 1969-1970" and was secured to the headstone with screws.
The woman said the plaque was on the headstone at St. Patrick's Cemetery when she visited the grave site around Christmas, but when she returned last week to place decorations on his grave for Memorial Day, it was missing. The plaque was valued at $200.
Man arrested for public intoxication, intimidation
CHESTERTON | A Valparaiso man was arrested Wednesday evening after he allegedly harassed customers and staff at a local fast-food restaurant, then threatened the police officer who arrested him.
Michael D. Overton, 35, of 604 Center St., Valparaiso, was charged with public intoxication and felony intimidation.
The manager of McDonald's, 480 Indiana Boundary Road, flagged down a police officer just before 6 p.m. Wednesday to tell him that Overton had twice been in the restaurant that day being belligerent with her, making vulgar comments and scaring customers.
Police found Overton sitting on a bench outside an adjacent business.
Overton allegedly became agitated with police, cursing and calling the officer names. En route to the Porter County Jail, Overton allegedly threatened to kill the officer and his mother.
Overton's blood alcohol level registered .231, nearly three times the legal limit of .08.
