CHESTERTON | Local veterans are invited to a program featuring retired Gen. John Borling, an Air Force veteran who survived imprisonment during the Vietnam War by writing and memorizing poetry.

Borling will speak at 12:30 p.m. April 19 at St. Patrick Church.

Borling “wrote” and memorized poems to keep his mind sharp and spirits up. He shared his creations with fellow captives by their only means of communication — the forbidden POW tap code. Rapping on the cell walls with his knuckles, he tapped poems of pain and despair, humor, encouragement and hope.

He is the author of “Taps on the Walls: Poems from the Hanoi Hilton.”
