Implementation of our technology plan, particularly during the past three years, has resulted in a complete upgrade of hardware and peripherals, the addition of new devices and increased utilization by students and staff.
The transformation from chalkboards and overhead projectors to doc cams and digital projectors, and whiteboards and SMART boards has been exciting to watch. Students and teachers are able to interact with and learn from one another in many more ways through the increased use of technology.
All classroom teachers received an iPad at the beginning of this school year. The iPads were provided to help increase student achievement, further engage all students in their learning, and to help teachers do their important work more efficiently. In addition, we acquired a set of 30 iPods for classroom use. The iPods are available for teachers to check out and use with students for instruction, practicing a skill, or enrichment activities.
We have already seen many creative and exciting ways that students and teachers are using the iPads and iPods. Kindergarten students are practicing their letter writing and letter-sounds relations. Basic math facts are available for all students, which means there is almost no need for flash cards. Science labs can be conducted and analyzed. Interactive books and videos are available in all subject areas. The number and variety of uses for iPads and iPods in the classroom is virtually endless.
We have been meeting once a month to share with one another what we have learned and how we are using our new technology equipment and devices in the classroom. Teachers will continue to receive training for the iPads and iPods because there is so much more to explore and use that will benefit our teachers and students.
The students and teachers at Yost Elementary continue to explore how the use of technology can improve the delivery of instruction and student achievement.
