CHESTERTON | The members of the Chesterton High School Trojan Guard Marching Band brought home the title of the Indiana State School Music Association’s (ISSMA) 2013 Scholastic Class “A” State Champion this past Saturday hosted by Lawrence Central High School of Indianapolis on behalf of ISSMA Inc. The Trojan Guard’s 2013 field show is entitled, “Cathedrals.” The production is a musical celebration of the great gothic era architecture using various melodies that have originated in these structures over the last 12 centuries.
On October 12, three high schools, including one from the Northern, Central, and Southern portions of Indiana, hosted the Scholastic Class Preliminary competitions. The results of these competitions determined which scholastic class bands would qualify to move on to their State Finals. A total of 16 bands made it through these preliminary events, giving them the chance to compete head-to-head at the ISSMA State Scholastic Finals.
“We couldn’t be happier for the kids” said Band Director Michael Scheiber. “They’ve worked very hard and overcome a lot obstacles to make it this far. Their success just reaffirms the value of preparation and a sincere belief in yourself,” Scheiber added.
The band entered Chesterton late Saturday night behind the lights and sirens of two local police vehicles that met the group at the edge of town and escorted them to the high school. Scores of Trojan Guard relatives, friends, and alumni were waiting to welcome the band with signs waving, and horns honking. “It was just like the good old days when the band came home after winning state,” said Suzi Galvin, former drum major and staff member of the Trojan Guard. The band will use this week to prepare for their performance in Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium this coming Saturday as part of the "Open Class" State Finals. There will also be an awards ceremony after their performance recognizing them as the new Scholastic Class “A” State Champions.
