Westchester Public Library offers different programs for all ages at Thomas and Hageman libraries. Tickle Tales is a program for very young patrons. The program is for children ages a year to 24 months and a parent or caregiver. First-time parents are especially encouraged to attend. The fall season of Tickle Tales will begin the week of Sept. 23.
Tickle Tales is a creative, hands-on introduction to books and the library. Parents have said they have noticed their children carrying what they have learned home with them. The children are eager to participate in the sessions.
Space is limited, although as children reach 24 months and move on, space becomes available. Registration is required in advance at the library, where the child will attend Tickle Tales. Tickle Tales takes place at 10 a.m. Tuesday mornings at Hageman Library, 100 Francis St., Porter, beginning Sept. 24. Thomas Library, 200 W. Library card sign up month
September is Library Card Sign-up Month — a time when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all. In celebration of Library Card Sign-up Month, Westchester Public Library will waive the $1 replacement fee for patrons who have lost their library cards. The $5 fee for replacing a card the second time within a year will not be waived, and there will be no amnesty for late items.
Westchester Public Library serves the residents of Westchester Township but has reciprocal borrowing agreements with most of the other public libraries in the area. The towns of Chesterton, Porter, Burns Harbor and Dune Acres are in the library district, with two branches available to patrons. The main branch, Thomas Library, is at 200 W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton, (219) 926-7696. Hageman Branch is at 100 Francis St., Porter, (219) 926-9080. The Westchester Township History Museum is a free educational and cultural service of the library and is at 700 W. Porter Ave., Chesterton, (219) 983-9715.
