Meet the author

CHESTERTON | Local artist/author Donna Krizek will present her latest publication, "Drawing and Sketching Secrets: 200 Tips and Techniques for Drawing the Easy Way" from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the Bertha Wood Room on the second floor of Thomas Library, 200 W. Bits and Bytes

CHESTERTON | Bits and Bytes will continue at Westchester Public Library with Managing Your Digital Photos from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Bertha Wood Room on the second floor of Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave. Registration is required and will begin on Saturday. Registration is available by calling or visiting the Automation/Serials Department or by visiting the Bits and Bytes page on the library’s website, www.wpl.lib.in.us/ Attendees will learn the basics of importing and exporting digital photographs, editing photos and resizing them. Drawing programs

CHESTERTON | Adults who are interested in learning the basics of drawing or expanding the knowledge they already have are invited to one of two drawing programs, based on the newly released Readers Digest book, "Drawing and Sketching Secrets," taught this month by the author and artist Donna Krizek, at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave. Registration is now under way. Materials will be provided by the library.

Computer basics

CHESTERTON | Bits and Bytes will continue from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at Westchester Public Library, with Computer Basics 1. Attendees will meet in the Bertha Wood Room on the second floor of Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave. The class is free, but registration is required as computer stations are limited to 15. Budgeting 101

CHESTERTON | Budgeting 101 for Adults will return to Westchester Public Library from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 12 in the Bertha Wood Room at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave. Registration is necessary. Thomas Murphy will share financial ideas gleaned from 40 years of financial experience advising small, medium, and large corporations. He has a bachelor’s in accounting, as well as a master’s degree. He is also a certified management accountant and an RSVP volunteer. The session will include where to start with a plan, steps of effective financial planning, and good financial habits to develop. Call (219) 926-7696.

Movie series

PORTER | Westchester Public Library’s preschool movie series will continue at 10 a.m. today at Hageman Library, 100 Francis St., with "Curious George Plays in the Snow." All library films are free of charge and open to the public. Call (219) 926-9080.

Knitting group

CHESTERTON | Area knitters are invited to gather in the Brown Mansion parlor for a cozy afternoon of knitting, conversation and refreshments from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday for Knitting Together. The program is free and open to the public. Those who crochet or do needlework are also welcome to attend at the Westchester Township History museum, 700 W. Porter Ave. Call (219) 983-9715.

Children's programs

Westchester Public Library will continue with several popular children’s programs this winter and spring. These programs are for different ages and are held at different times to meet the needs of families with young children. Programs are held at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton, and Hageman Library, 100 Francis St., Porter. Children’s programs will begin Monday at Hageman Library and Jan. 28 at Thomas Library.

Play Date is an unstructured playtime for babies newborn to 12 months old (siblings welcome) and their parent or caregiver. Play Date is at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays at Hageman Library and 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays at Thomas Library.

Tickle Tales is a creative, hands-on introduction to books and the library for children 9 months old to 2 years of age and their parent or caregiver. Tickle Tales is held at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays at Hageman Library and 10 a.m. on Wednesdays at Thomas Library. Space is limited, so registration is required.

Toddler Time is a special story time for children 2 to 3 years of age and their parent or caregiver. Hageman Library will host Toddler Time at 10 a.m. Mondays. Toddler Time is an informal introduction to books and the library.

Wiggles & Giggles is a story time for children 2 to 3 years of age and their parent or caregiver at Thomas Library on Thursday and Friday mornings at 10 a.m. At Wiggles & Giggles, interaction between caretaker and child will include book sharing and singing along with Grandma Frankie.

Stepping Stone 3’s is a story time for 3-year-olds who are independent of their parent but not ready for a longer story time. Stepping Stone 3’s is at 10 a.m. Wednesdays at Hageman Library.

Preschool Story Time is for children 4 to 6 years of age and not yet in kindergarten. Sessions are at 10 a.m. Tuesdays at Thomas Library and at 3 p.m. Thursdays at Hageman. Programs last approximately 45 minutes and are available on a drop-in basis.

Library story time programs are exciting and fun-filled, yet also provide important learning experiences for young children. In addition to listening to stories, sessions also include music, finger plays and stories told in a variety of formats. Programs are built around weekly themes that enlarge children’s knowledge of life and expand their vocabulary.

Listening to stories and learning to follow directions help to build positive attitudes toward books. They also help children develop valuable prereading skills. In addition, talking with the storyteller helps children increase their creativity and their ability to comprehend languages and express ideas. Call (219) 926-7696 or (219) 926-9080.

Polka Dot parties

CHESTERTON | Polka Dot Parties with Carol will continue for adults from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 14 and 28 at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave. Registration is required. Materials are provided by the library.

Polka Dot Party attendees will learn a variety of stamping and paper crafting techniques to incorporate into a personal spill journal during the Jan. 14 Spill Journal session. Spill journaling uses mixed media techniques for free expression of thoughts, dreams, goals, plans, trips and more. Each journal is as unique as the individual who creates it.

Quilling uses strips of rolled and shaped paper glued together at the tips to create 3D flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns for scrapbooking. Attendees to the Jan. 28 session will learn the old-fashioned art of quilling.

Carol Walsh will lead the crafting sessions. Carol’s passion for crafting started years ago and has expanded to include cards and scrapbooking. She is excited about sharing her love for crafting with library patrons. Call (219) 926-7696.

I Can Do That!

CHESTERTON | I Can Do That! Art will continue at Westchester Public Library each Saturday this month. All ages are welcome, but parents are asked to accompany little ones. The free program will be in the Children’s Department at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave. Drop in any time between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Call (219) 926-7696.

New online collections

CHESTERTON, PORTER | Westchester Public Library is offering township resident patrons access to new online collections through the library's website. A collection of popular magazines from a site called Zinio will be accessible in the library on public access workstations and tablets. The library will continue to have print subscriptions to newspapers and magazines available for browsing. It also will begin providing access to a downloadable music service called Freegal. The service allows patrons to download up to three songs per week for free from a catalog of more than 3 million songs.

Friday Night at the Movies

Friday Night at the Movies, Westchester Public Library’s monthly popular movie series has changed the day, location, time, and even name. Beginning on Jan. 13, Sunday Matinee will be at 1:30 p.m. monthly in the Bertha Wood Room at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave. This year's first movie is "The Dark Knight Rises." History group

Mad about Mysteries

CHESTERTON |  Join local mystery author Ellen Foster for this month's sessions of Mad About Mysteries at the Westchester Township History Museum, 700 W.
