CHESTERTON | The Friends 17th annual Native Plant Sale heralds the return of spring. Organized by the Friends of Indiana Dunes, the Native Plant Sale returns to the Indiana Dunes State Park Pavilion, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 13. Admission is free.
Open shopping of all plant material. Informed gardening consultants will be available to answer native gardening questions. A variety of free leaflets on planting with wildflowers, designing a native garden, and the many benefits of going native will be available at the sale. All Native Plant Sale profits will support the mission of the Friends of Indiana Dunes.
More than 100 native plant species, including woodland flowering plants and ferns; dry, medium and wet prairie flowering plants; as well as grasses, shrubs and trees. Again this year, there will be a large selection of hard to find woodlands and ferns. All varieties come in pots and are native to northwest Indiana, northeast Illinois, and southwest Michigan.
Only a limited quantity of each plant variety is ordered from the supplier. The pre-orders are filled in the sequence in which they are received. Every year several varieties will sell out before the day of the sale as those plants went to pre-order customers. The pre-order forms are available at the State Park Nature Center, Chesterton Feed and Garden Center, and the Porter County visitor center, all located in Chesterton. To request a pre-order form be mailed, contact Zella Olson, Chair of the Friends at (219) 926-3833.
The deadline for submitting a completed pre-order form is April 6.
