Parents Night Out
Parents can use the Parents Night Out program and stop worrying about finding a sitter, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. every Friday. Trained YMCA staff have organized and fun activities planned to keep each child’s attention. The cost for members is $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child. The nonmember rate is $20 for the first child and $10 for each additional child.
Free SAT practice test
Fully proctored practice tests will show students what to expect in a test-like environment. Students will receive comprehensive analysis of their performance on practice test detailing individual strengths and weaknesses. SAT practice test is noon to 5 p.m. April 13. Spring break camp
Spring break camp for youth in kindergarten through grade 6 is March 24 to 28. Activities will include walking field trips, cooperative games, crafts, gym time and more.
The Community Wellness Nurse will conduct bone density screenings from 8:30 to 11 a.m. today in the Senior Center. On March 19 there will be cholesterol and blood sugar screenings (12-hour fast required) from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Ringing in Spring race
Ringing in Spring is April 5. Organized by longtime local runners and the Valparaiso Family YMCA, the Ringing in Spring 5K and 10K race is a Gold Cup, CARA Green Certified Race, has disposable chip timing, moisture wicking shirts, personalized race bibs, free child care and gear check. Second InSWIMniac event
The Valparaiso Family YMCA will be hosting its second annual 24-Hour InSWIMniac event Saturday and Sunday. You can either participate as an individual or you can make a team of up to 10 people. Teams and individuals will swim laps from noon to noon around a custom course in the lap pool. Valpo Skates is at 605 Campbell St. in Valparaiso in the Ben Franklin Middle School gym annex. Kindergartners through sixth-graders can skate from 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays. Family Skate is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays (all ages). The cost is $6 per skater.
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week program for adult cancer survivors and is offered free at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. It is open to Y members and residents. Program focus includes improving cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, balance, stress management and confidence. Summer Camp registration is now open. Camp is structured by a daily schedule which provides focused activities developed from weekly themes. Camp activities will be held outdoors on YMCA grounds in our pavilion. The YMCA facility includes a playground, youth wellness room, swimming pool, and gym. The Creative Curriculum program, developed by Teaching Strategies Inc., will still be part of the preschool program. The Creative Curriculum is grounded in the latest research on how children learn best. This curriculum helps guide teachers in planning for the specific needs and interest of children. Methodist Hospitals Seminars

SPLASH is a new and free program for kids that teaches children how to be safer in and around the water. The program is designed for non-swimmers ages pre-K (3-5 years), grade school (ages 6-11 years) and middle school (ages 12-14 years). Splash is open to Members and Community. Swim, gymnastics lessons
Sign up to learn new skills, meet new friends and have fun this winter. Progressive swim lessons for all ages. Progress gymnastics lessons begin at age 3. See website for schedules.

Teen fitness class
A four-week Teen Fitness Class for kids ages 12 to 14 is offered. Class participants learn how to properly use the equipment in the Portage Y’s cardio and cybex machine rooms, basic anatomy and physiology, proper stretching techniques, nutrition guidelines and more. Graduates of the class will then be allowed to use the YMCA equipment on their own. Classes begin at the start of each month, so check the website. All members must be at least 14 years of age or be at least 12 years old and have passed the YMCA Teen Fitness Class to use the YMCA equipment.
