Stand Up Paddle – Free Demo on May 18th

First Tee Golf
Youth learn about the game of golf and life lessons. Program is designed for 7 to 14-year-olds. Session runs from July 15-19 from noon until 2 p.m. Cost is $95 for Y members and $110 for community. Please see the Y Courtesy Desk to register.
Fit for Life
Free for members, this program is for parents and middle school-age kids to work out in the Wellness Center. The program focuses on fit family time, wellness habits and healthy lifestyle choices. Hours are 7 to 8 a.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; 7 to 8 a.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. Saturdays; 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. Sundays.
Pilates mat work
Core strengthening exercises with a focus on flexibility and posture class meets from 8:05 to 8:50 a.m. Mondays through Fridays; 6:30 to 7:20 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10 to 11 a.m. Fridays. All classes are in Studio C.
Pilates personal training

Y Full and Half-Day preschool

YMCA Summer Camp sign-up
This year’s camp runs June 10 to Aug. 16 and includes great field trips, swimming, arts and crafts, sports and games, cooking, movie days and more. Sports of All Sorts
Kids 4 to 6 years old participate in various sports learning basic skills and having fun. Class meets from 11:15 to noon or 2:15 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $36 for members and $62 for community.
Healthy Kids Day
Enjoy some great family time from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Wear your gym shoes, bring your bathing suit and towel and enjoy a special day at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. Light snacks will be served but bring along a picnic lunch. No registration is necessary.
Get ready for some golf on July 25 at the Valparaiso Country Club. This year marks the Valparaiso Family YMCA’s 23rd annual golf outing. Registration and lunch is at 11 a.m with a shotgun start at noon. The cost is $125 per golfer or $500 per team. Funds raised provide affordable sports programs for all kids to learn, grow and thrive.
11th annual Valpo Triathlon
Online registration is now open for the Valpo Triathlon which will take place at 8 a.m. July 13. This race features a ¼-mile swim, a 12.4-mile bike ride, and a 3.2-mile run and is a sanctioned USA Triathlon event. Participants must register by July 10, with a limit of 500 participants (register by June 27 to receive a dry-release wicking shirt). Race fees are $72 for non-USAT members and $60 for USAT members. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week program and is offered free at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. It is open to Y members and the community. Program focus includes improving cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, balance, stress management and confidence. The program will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-2:30 p.m. beginning Monday.
Owning Your Heart Health
Learn how you can work as a partner with your doctor to ensure long-term heart health. Presented by Dr. Nazzal Obaid the seminar begins at 5:30 p.m. today.
A spin-a-thon is planned for 8 to 11 a.m. May 18. Spin individually or as a team. The individual with the most pledges wins the grand prize. Register at the Y’s Wellness Desk. All proceeds from this event will help support the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Program.

Child care, development

As part of the Y’s focus on youth development, the Y offers gymnastics for young children through its Sparklers gymnastics team. Stop in for details or go to www.ymcaofportage.org.
Before- and after-school care
The Y offers Y-Care, before- and after-school care for children in grades one through eight enrolled in one of the six Portage Township elementary schools. The program provides guided, structured and educational activities in a safe and secure, fun environment with low child-to-staff ratio. Children can be dropped off before school as early as 6:30 a.m. and picked up after school as late as 6 p.m. Y-Care is held at Aylesworth (serving Aylesworth, Willowcreek, Central, Myers and Fegely schools) and Jones (serving Jones, Crisman and Kyle schools). Program fees vary according to hours of use. Financial assistance is available to those in need, to ensure every child and teen has the opportunity to learn and grow at the Y. The Portage Township YMCA also accepts CCDF vouchers.
Free Community Running Club is for amateur runners who will meet in the YMCA lobby at 6 p.m. every Tuesday. Dress for the weather. All one-hour runs will be outside unless it is lightning or below 15 degrees. Participants will be running three to five miles with calisthenics and stretching. Must be 14 and older to participate. Fun Zone is available only to YMCA members.
Walk this Way
The YMCA, in conjunction with the city of Portage, is offering a walking club. This club will walk from 10 to 11 a.m. every Tuesday. This community club does not require a membership to the YMCA. Interested walkers/runners can meet in the YMCA lobby at 9:45 a.m. The Rails to Trails will be used for this program and led by YMCA Executive Director Dave Kasarda. During inclement weather, the YMCA track will be used. Membership not needed.
Thursday night volleyball free for Y members 14 and older from 7 to 9 p.m. Nonmembers pay $10. Advanced court and recreational court available. Parent or guardian must sign in participant.
Register a child for his/her sport physical with employed physicians & nurse practitioners of St. Mary Medical Center. Cost is $20. Physicals will be offered from 5 to 8 p.m. April 25 and 9 a.m. to noon May 4 and June 8. Registration required. Call (219) 764-7217.
Adult golf league runs May 2 through Aug. 22 at Robbinhurst golf club. League will be on Thursday afternoons, Tee Time-TBA.
Registration is open for ages 3-8. Weekday practices with games played on Saturday mornings. All practices and games will be held at Real Life Community Church in Portage. League runs from May 6 through June 29.

Healthy Kids Day
The 2013 Healthy Kids Day is noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Duneland Y's Early Childhood Development center located in Chesterton Middle School, Entrance No. 8. Healthy Kids Day will feature fun active play and educational activities that will inspire kids to carry a spirit of excitement and exploration throughout their summer, the entire family can participate.
Family Fun Fitness
Beginning Wednesday, Family Fun Fitness will be offered for parents and their children 6-12 years old each week on Monday and Wednesday at 4:45 PM. This fitness class gives parents and children a chance to exercise together while taking part in numerous physical activities: hula-hoop, Zumba, Mixed Martial Arts, and games. This class is complimentary with a membership and taught by fitness professionals. Non-members can purchase a daily pass to participate.
Parent's Night Out
Every Friday night from 6 to 9:30 p.m., Parents can utilize the Parent’s Night Out program and stop worrying about finding a sitter. Trained YMCA staff have organized and fun activities planned to keep each child’s attention. From arts and crafts to gym time it is never a dull moment on Friday evenings at the Y. Not to mention, it is affordable! The cost for members is $10 for the first child & $5 for each additional child. The non-member rate is $20 for the first child & $10 for each additional child. Reservations must be made by Thursday of each week.
On Friday evenings, youth in the 6th-8th grade are invited to hang out at the Y from 6 to 9 p.m. There is no cost for members and $3 for others. Whether they want to play a game of pick up dodge ball, dance, or just have a place to talk with your friends the Y is at the disposal of those who attend. Teens can have fun without their parents around; however, parents can have ease of mind knowing their child is in safe hands.
Community health nurse
A Porter Regional Hospital Wellness Nurse will be at the Duneland Family YMCA from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to hold free Blood Pressure/Blood Sugar/Body Mass Index Screenings.
