CHESTERTON | The Special Education department at Discovery Charter School is excited to announce that we have received a grant for $69,000 from the Indiana Department of Education. This grant, the Special Education Improvement Award, focused on purchasing different technology tools to help further increase learning for special education students both within the resource room and the general education classroom.
Some of the items that will be purchased include a laptop cart with fifteen computers for use by the students in the resource room. Various online websites that require subscriptions will also be purchased. Many of these websites offer additional reading, math, and science resources. Star boards will also be purchased. Star boards, similar to Smart Boards, will allow students a more interactive and visual approach to learning.
Professional development allows for teachers to continually grow and learn newer ways to assist their students. A portion of the grant has been reserved for the special education staff to attend various conferences in order to improve instruction within the general and special education settings. Professional development will also include training on the Star boards so that they can be utilized to their fullest potential.
The grant will also allow the resource room staff to purchase additional manipulatives and reading materials for their students. This being the second year for Discovery Charter School, there are still many resources that would greatly benefit the special education department. We are excited for the improvements this grant will allow us to make!
