VALPARAISO | A former employee of the Porter County Sheriff's Department filed suit claiming he was mistreated and wrongfully fired as a result of shedding light on illegal activities at the department and the county animal shelter.
Jeffery Jackson, who worked at the department from November 2009 to October 2012, is seeking an unspecified amount of back pay, damages and attorney fees.
Jackson claims in the civil lawsuit he was discharged, threatened, harassed and discriminated against as a result of his whistle-blowing activities.
He said he was cussed out on several occasions to the point he felt threatened to ask questions regarding his duties, according to the suit. He said he incurred medical and hospital bills as a result of his experiences.
Jackson claims in a separate lawsuit the sheriff's department repeatedly failed to pay him and still owes him an unspecified amount of money.
He said when he informed Sheriff Dave Lain about this problem, he was fired, according to the lawsuit.
Porter County police Sgt. Larry LaFlower said Wednesday the department does not comment on pending litigation.
