JACKSON TOWNSHIP | A 23-year-old Crown Point man suffered a broken back when he lost control of his car Monday night while being pursued by police.
Police said the man was intoxicated.
According to Porter County police, an officer spotted the man just after 10 p.m. on U.S. 6 in the area of County Road 250 West.
Police said the man was driving 70 mph in a 50 mph zone. When the officer turned on his overhead light to stop the driver, the driver ran a red light at County Road 200 West, then continued eastbound on U.S. 6 passing other vehicles.
The officer said he reached 110 mph and the driver continued to pull away from him.
Police said the car went off the road near Mander Road and ended up hitting several trees at 285 E. U.S. 6.
The officer found the man in the backseat of the car, and the driver told him another man had been driving.
But police said they checked the area and didn't find anyone. The driver then admitted he had been the only one in the car.
The driver was taken to Porter Region Hospital and was admitted for a broken back, according to police.
The police report states the driver was had a blood-alcohol content of .264 percent, which is more than three times the legal limit.
Police are seeking to charge him with drunken driving, reckless driving and resisting law enforcement.
