JACKSON TOWNSHIP | A two-car garage was destroyed and the attached home significantly damaged here Thursday night in a fire.
Firefighters responded to the fire at 330 Mt. Jackson Ave. around 6:15 p.m., said Liberty Township Fire Department Assistant Chief Tom Shapen.
When firefighters arrived, the garage was fully involved in flames. The homeowner was home at the time, was alerted to the fire and left the home without injury, said Shapen.
The fire extended into the home through the ceiling.
Shapen said the fire gutted the garage, destroying the contents including a pick-up truck. The home sustained damage and is not livable.
Westville, Chesterton and Liberty Township fire departments were first on the scene. South Haven, Pine Township and Beverly Shores fire departments assisted with tankers.
The fire was struck about an hour later. The Porter County Fire Investigation Strike Team responded to investigate. They found the fire originated in the garage, but have not yet determined a cause.
