JACKSON TOWNSHIP | A 53-year-old Jackson Township man punched and broke the windshield of a 73-year-old woman in an apparent road rage incident Wednesday morning, according to Porter County Sheriff's Department.
Both parties agreed he stopped his car along County Road 1050 North, jumped out of his vehicle, ran back to hers and punched the windshield.
But the two tell investigators different stories about what led to the incident.
The woman told police they were westbound on 1050 North and the man was driving his pickup 30 mph in a 40 mph zone. She said she passed the man, and the man then passed her and then stopped in front of her. She told police she was scared so she drove off and planned to call police when she got to work.
The man told police the woman was following too closely, tried a couple times to pass him. He told police he was driving about 45 mph. He said he became upset about the woman’s driving, so he stopped. He claims the woman made obscene gestures at him and shouted an obscenity, then tried to run him over. He said it was then that he hit her windshield.
Police said the man apologized about the incident and said, “I let my stupidity get the best of me.”
The report is being sent to the prosecutor’s office for review. No arrest was made, but a sheriff's official said Thursday night they are seeking an arrest warrant for a Class A misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief.
