LIBERTY TOWNSHIP | Two 14-year-old boys were injured, one seriously, when they were struck by a drunken driver Monday night, according to Porter County police.
One of the boys was taken to a South Bend hospital for treatment of head trauma and facial injuries, according to police.
The boys names were not released, and police had no further information about their injuries.
Police were called about 7:15 p.m. to the area of County Road 200 West, just south of Sauk Trail.
Police found the two boys lying in the street and a white GMC pickup truck partially submerged in water on the east side of the road.
Tyler McKinney, 20, of Valparaiso, was identified as the driver.
Witnesses told police McKinney was southbound on 200 West, swerved into the northbound lanes and hit the two boys before the truck went off the road. Two passengers in the truck ran off, witnesses told police.
Witnesses told police McKinney also started to run away, but stopped when witnesses told him to stay at the scene.
Police said McKinney failed field sobriety tests as well as a portable breath test and blood tests.
McKinney said he and his friends had been drinking since about 3 p.m. Monday, according to the police report.
McKinney was charged with operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, which is a Class D felony, and minor consumption of alcohol.
