CHESTERTON | Katie Hansen, a fourth-grader at Yost Elementary School in Porter, walked to her bus stop in her new pink Converse shoes with her bag full of new school supplies for her first day of school.
“I’m excited. I get to see my friends again and I got to meet my new teacher at registration and she’s nice,” Hansen said.
Audrey White, a first-grader at Yost, also said she was looking forward to her first day of school.
“I couldn’t sleep last night, I was so excited for school,” said White, her long hair neatly combed underneath a sparkly lavender headband.
Michael Megyesi, who is also in his first day of school as Chesterton Middle School’s new principal, said the school was running smoothly.
“I couldn’t be happier," he said. "Everything is going beautifully, without a hitch. My staff is all on the same page and we set some clear, easy-to-understand expectations ahead of time at a staff meeting.
"We called the students into the auditorium so we set their expectations. Everyone seems to be very upbeat and excited for the first day of school,” Megyesi said.
Megyesi was excited to begin his work with students, parents and staff.
“This is a dream job for me," he said. "Coming from Washington Township as assistant principal, everyone was phenomenal in getting me prepared for this position. Everyone here has been welcoming and willing to lend a helping hand.
"It’s been an easy transition. I live within the community and I feel at home,” he said.
Jim Goetz, principal at Chesterton High School, said he was experiencing a smooth first day.
“This place continues to amaze me," Goetz said. "The bell rings for class to start and the hallway just empties. Our parents and kids did a great job of getting in here, especially the freshmen who may not know their way around at first. In the classroom, the teachers have handed out the books and they’re starting their lessons."
Megyesi acknowledges there may be a few “bumps in the road” over the next year, but he’s optimistic the first day has set the right tone.
“You see the smiles and kids saying hi to you, and you throw a joke or two at them and try to relate to them and everyone is so nice and easygoing. This is heaven right now. Right now," he said.
