VALPARAISO | Lisa Moser's career path from law firm secretary to attorney took a big leap Thursday when she was sworn in to fill the county's newly created position of court commissioner.
The Valparaiso resident will spend three days a week hearing paternity and child support cases in a newly created courtroom at the county's juvenile services center south of U.S. 30 on Ind. 2, said Porter Circuit Court Judge Mary Harper.
The balance of her time will be spent easing the heavy caseloads of Porter Superior Judges Jeffrey Thode and David Chidester.
"I am honored to have been selected to become the Porter County Court commissioner," Moser said in a prepared statement.
"I look forward to helping the families of Porter County," she said. "I will strive to process matters in the most efficient manner possible."
Moser, a 2004 graduate of the Valparaiso University School of Law, said she has served as deputy public defender in cases involving abused and neglected children, as well as in the county's drug and veteran treatment courts.
She was appointed commissioner by the county's judges and sworn in Thursday by Harper.
"Congratulations, you're in," Harper said.
The short swearing-in ceremony was conducted in front of a small group of family, supporters and staff. Moser was cloaked with a black robe worn by other females serving in judicial positions in the county.
Moser's appointment officially takes effect Jan. 1.
