VALPARAISO | Jeremy Coronado and Dawn Snoreck said there was no great symbolic meaning behind their decision to get married Wednesday, which broke down numerically to 12/12/12.
Snoreck said after two years of being engaged, the topic of getting married on the unique date came up at work and she successfully pitched the idea to Coronado.
"We've been planning and planning," she said.
The Valparaiso residents stood in front of a small group of family and friends early Wednesday afternoon to become the first of three couples to tie the knot before Porter Circuit Court Judge Mary Harper.
"It's everything I dreamed of," Coronado joked as he stood at the front of the courtroom.
Another six marriages were planned later in the day elsewhere in the downtown Valparaiso courthouse.
Coronado said he expected more nuptials to be under way Wednesday and thought it would be tougher than it was to make arrangements.
Harper had the couple hold hands and then tailored the short service for the day by pointing out the frequency of the number 12, whether it be 12 ounces in a soda, 12 objects in a dozen or 12 inches in a foot. She also said 12 is the last number in the English language that is pronounced with a single syllable.
As she spoke about the honorable nature of marriage and had the couple exchange vows and rings, Snoreck teared up along with others in the room before sealing the arrangement with a kiss.
Harper said she does not do a lot of marriages, but figured there would be some people interested in tying the knot on the symbolic day. She guessed there also will be interest on Nov. 12, 2013 (11-12-13), on Valentine's Day, and between Christmas and New Year's Day as always.
"It's really the nicest work I do in this room," she said of the courtroom, which is far more often the site of criminal proceedings.
