Chesterton resident Kevin Fekete, 18, recently received a corporate–sponsored National Merit Scholarship through the NiSource Charitable Foundation Employee Scholarship program.
The scholarship provides Fekete $1,000 per year of college, and is available to students who have a parent that works at NIPSCO, owned by NiSource.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be named a National Merit winner,” Fekete said.
A 2013 graduate of Chesterton High School, Fekete earned a 3.8 grade-point-average and will attend Purdue University, West Lafayette to major in pre-pharmacy.
“I enjoy being able to help people and science is my favorite subject,” Fekete said.
“I mostly made the pre-pharmacy decision on my own. Although I have been switching back and forth between what I want to be my final career, many of the experiences in high school helped me come to this decision.”
“I will be trying out for the club volleyball team in college, but mostly focusing on my academics,” he added.
The son of Arlene and Brian Fekete, Fekete played football throughout high school and was named Most Improved Player his junior year, and became a Duneland Athletic Conference champion his senior year.
In addition, Fekete was a member of National Honor Society, the Natural Helpers Program and the International Baccalaureate Program, requiring him to perform various service projects.
