CHESTERTON | The Northwest ISBDC is honoring region entrepreneurs and champions at its 22nd annual Entrepreneurial Excellence Awards event on Nov. 6! The Class of 2013 includes Roxanne Perkins and Jacqueline Woods of Chesterton-based delicious deep freeze. They have been named the Minority-Owned Business of the Year. Here is their story.

Business partners and sisters Roxanne Perkins and Jacqueline Woods found a franchise fit with dippin’ dots when they launched delicious deep freeze.

“Roxanne and I always wanted to own a franchised business. While we were working our full-time jobs, we researched and interviewed many franchised systems. The process took about five years,” Woods said. “Dippin’ dots franchise was the one that fit our personalities: fun, unique and flexible. Dippin’ dots also offers many streams of sales opportunities.”

The team enjoys the flexibility of a seasonal business that also provides an opportunity to help schools and organizations raise funds.

“The summer we are working everyday... while the winter offers us time off for travel,” Woods said. “We do a lot of fund-raisers and competitions in the winter where a portion of our proceeds goes to the team that sponsors the competition.”

Woods said, of course, offering a sweet treat is a cool way to build a business.

“We enjoy the smiles dippin’ dots put on the faces of ice cream lovers,” she said. “We are told many stories by our customers when and where they had their first experience with dippin’ dots and their age.”

Being sisters has laid the groundwork for a strong partnership between Perkins and Woods.

“The benefit is we seem to have common goals. We have different strengths and weaknesses and we melted right into those positions,” Perkins said. “It seems like we mesh together.”

The two are looking to expand along the Northwest Indiana Lake Michigan beachfront and set up a kiosk location with the Chicago Park district along the downtown tourist area.

“This expansion will allow us to provide teenagers and college students jobs in the summer months,” Woods said.
