PINE TOWNSHIP | Two women were hurt in a wreck Wednesday afternoon when their car ran into railroad equipment.
Authorities said a 23-year-old woman was eastbound on in the 1800 block of East U.S. 20 about 4:30 p.m. when she crashed into the crossing gate which was lowered and flashing.
The driver and passenger were taken to St. Anthony Medical Center in Michigan City. The extent of their injuries was not known.
A nurse discovered the driver hiding a bag of heroin in her groin area.
The driver told police she took her eyes off the road to grab a cigarette, but also told him that she had taken Xanax and heroin during the last 48 hours.
Charges of possession of a controlled substance are being sought through the prosecutor’s office. Potential OWI charges are pending state lab results.
