PINE TOWNSHIP | A 43-year-old Michigan City man told police he fought off three attackers Wednesday night, including a man with a shotgun, while walking home from bars in Pine Township.
The man said he had stopped by Joe's Bar and another, and drank tequila shots with stranger on a Harley, before setting out on foot for home along U.S. 20, police said.
He told police three men in a blue Cadillac Eldorado with a "nice set of silver rims on the wheels" and Illinois plates pulled up and demanded money. When he resisted, he said he was punched and responded by punching the three attackers.
He said he was able to put two of the men on the ground, yet the other, who was wearing a Joker mask from Batman, retrieved a shotgun from the trunk of the car and cocked it, police said. He said he was struck in the back of the head with the gun.
He fell to his knees, but stood up again and hit one of the men with an upper cut after the man began saying mean things about his mother. He told police he then picked up the attacker, tossed him to the ground and began punching him repeatedly.
He was then struck in the back of the head a second time with the gun and gave the men $120, police said. Two of the attackers then picked their friend off the ground and drove away.
Officials at Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Michigan City said the man suffered a possible broken hand, but had no sign of injuries on the back of his head. They said he was acting erratically, yelling at one moment and crying the next.
