CHESTERTON | On December 8, 2013, nine students from Chesterton's Tiger Martial Arts Academy competed in the 2013 United States National Taekwondo Federation (USNTF) Christmas Tournament in Franklin Park, Illinois. Under the leadership of Grandmaster Deborah Grimaldi and Master Steven Grimaldi, the team brought home a total of 22 trophies in three categories: forms, breaking, and sparring.
Josh Branshaw, age 12, placed 2nd in both forms and sparring. Evelyn Godinez, age 9, placed 2nd in sparring and 3rd in both forms and breaking. Vanessa Godinez, age 6, won 1st place in both sparring and breaking. Jolie Klimczak, age 10, won 1st place in both forms and sparring and placed 3rd in breaking. Stevie Klimczak, age 8, won 1st place in sparring, 2nd place in breaking, and 3rd place in forms. Kaylee Matula, age 8, won 1st place in breaking and 2nd place in forms. Daniel Reyes, age 10, won 1st place in forms and 2nd place in sparring. Ian Staresina, age 9, won 1st place in both forms and sparring. Oliver Wilgocki, age 8, won 2nd place in forms and 3rd place in breaking.
This was the first time competing in a tournament for Kaylee Matula, Daniel Reyes, and Oliver Wilgocki.
