PORTER | Longtime Porter resident and active community member Bill Cantrell left his tenure with the Porter Town Council due to health reasons, and Democrats will hold a caucus Thursday to reassign his position.
Council President Greg Stinson appointed himself on an interim basis to the stormwater board, a position held by Cantrell.
Assistant Porter Police Chief Todd Allen thanked his department for its efforts during the Fourth of July weekend.
“The midnight parade went well with no problems; the fireworks at the lakefront went very well; and we thank other departments and neighboring agencies,” Allen said.
Jay Craig Jr., assistant fire chief, concurred.
“All of the events went smoothly for us, no incidents,” with the exception of minor cuts and a few kids momentarily missing, Craig said. Public Works Director Brenda Brueckheimer also thanked her staff and partnering teams.
Council Vice President Elka Nelson thanked the owners of the Village Tavern for pulling the permit for the midnight parade and everyone who participated for living up to expectations.
“It was well attended, and nothing inappropriate about it at all. I’m proud to be a resident of the town of Porter that we can get together and have that much fun together with no problems. It’s not everywhere that can do that,” Nelson said.
Stinson said in the future, working with the Chesterton/Duneland Chamber of Commerce will be helpful in terms of emergency staffing.
Rondi Wightman, president of the Porter Park Board, reported the second of the three concerts in the park will be from 7 to 8 tonight at Hawthorne Park.
She said there will be a performance by City Lights Band and dance lessons. She encouraged people to bring wine and cheese or picnics or purchase food from vendors.
The town's insurance adviser, Steve Brady of Heritage Advisory Group, recommended the town stay with its current carrier and make no changes for employees. The firm sent information to multiple providers for quotes, Brady said.
Stinson said the council will set the item for action on the next agenda.
