PORTER | Firefighters from 10 departments battled a blaze for hours Tuesday night in frigid temperatures and high winds.
Porter Fire Chief Lewis Craig Sr. said the call came in at 7:45 p.m. that a home under construction was on fire at 1240 Sunset Ave.
Craig was the first to arrive on the scene and said flames were shooting out the west side of the home's second floor. Craig struck a first alarm calling in neighboring departments and activated two tanker plans to supply firefighters with sufficient water to put out the fire.
Craig said the large home was totally destroyed. Damage was estimated at $180,000. The exterior of the home's construction was completed, the interior was not finished. Utilities were connected to the home.
"It was a stubborn fire. It was hard to put out," said Craig, adding when the home's roof collapsed, firefighters ended up having to use foam to smother the fire. No injuries were reported.
Craig said they believe the fire started in a first floor utility room. The Porter County Fire Investigation Strike Team was activated to investigate the cause of the fire. Firefighters remained on the scene until 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
