Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore programs
The following programs are being offered at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore this February. For more information on any of the programs at the national lakeshore, contact Ryan Koepke at (219) 395-1882 or check the park's website at www.nps.gov/indu. All programs are free.
Douglas Center open house
Join a ranger for an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. every Saturday at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore's Douglas Center. Check out interactive exhibits, a park video and a live animal room. People can borrow a pair of cross country skis and explore the Miller Woods Trail just outside the center. The center is located at 100 N. Lake St., Gary.
Kid's Fun at visitor center
Enjoy an afternoon of fun kid's activities from 1 to 3 p.m. every Sunday in February. Join a national park ranger in the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center's activity room to help your children learn a little more about your neighborhood national park. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is located at 1215 N. Ind. 49, Porter.
Music Heritage Series at National Lakeshore
Join in with the Save the Tunes Council as they perform traditional music associated with the month of February. Tune up your vocal cords and gather up for a sing-along from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center.
The Save the Tunes Council is a group of local musicians devoted to preserving and passing on folk songs in the traditional way, using a variety of musical instruments including guitar, autoharp, dulcimer, banjo, harmonica, bagpipe, penny whistle, hurdy gurdy, and other obscure instruments. Meet at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center.
Help Chellberg Farm get ready for maple sugar time
Join a ranger from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 18 and lend a hand with tapping the trees, hanging buckets, and getting the sugar shack ready for another season. Meet at the Chellberg Farm parking lot. Work gloves and equipment will be provided. The Chellberg Farm is located on Mineral Springs Road between U.S. 20 and Highway 12 in central portion of the national lakeshore.
