PORTER | Five men were arrested after a high-speed chase Monday afternoon that started in The Pines and ended when the suspects’ car crashed in Porter.
Porter County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Larry LaFlower said guns and drugs were found in the vehicle and at least two of the men in the car had outstanding warrants for their arrest.
LaFlower said when an officer attempted a traffic stop in front of Verk’s convenient store on U.S. 12 in The Pines, the suspect car fled south on Ind. 520 and west on U.S. 20.
Nicole Durkin, of Valparaiso, said she was near the intersection of Tremont Road and U.S. 20 when she looked in the rearview mirror and saw a tan car changing lanes and speeding.
"First, I thought, 'What a jerk,'" she said. "Then I saw three squad cars behind him."
Durkin said she pulled over and was glad the vehicle didn't crash into her car.
LaFlower said the car crashed on U.S. 20 in Porter, near the intersection with Interstate 94 and Shelton Discount Fireworks.
He said the pursuit reached high speeds. The Porter County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by officers from Chesterton, Porter, Ogden Dunes, Burns Harbor and Portage.
All five men in the car were arrested. Their names were not being released Monday night as police continued to investigate.
None of the men was injured in the crash. One man who fled from the crash was apprehended by a police K-9.
