Chesterton resident Dawn Price enjoys interacting with children and staff as the newest Childcare Center Director at the Portage Township YMCA, 3100 Willowcreek Road.
Hired in July, Price oversees 16 day care teachers and 52 students, 2 to 5, who are enrolled.
“Interviewing and hiring, talking with parents about the center, giving tours, writing curriculum, taking payment and billing parents, and educating staff are just some of my duties,” Price, 43, said.
A Portage High School graduate, Price earned her education degree in 2004 from Purdue University North Central in Westville. She taught at Carl J. Polk Elementary in Lake Station, as well as Brummitt and Bailly elementary schools in Chesterton and John Simatovich Elementary School in Valparaiso.
“I became a teacher because I have a passion for learning and wanted to pass it down to our children. Seeing a child’s eyes light up when they discover something new makes it worth it,” she said.
As for her recent career change, Price said she wanted a change of pace.
“I wanted to do something different and (still) teach my passion for teaching and learning, and I really enjoy the Christian beliefs that YMCA represents,” she said.
