VALPARAISO | Fans of role-playing games are expected to flock to the Butterfield Family Pavilion on Oct. 5 for the first-ever Galacti-Con.
The Galacti-Con is fashioned after a similar event held each year in Indianapolis, according to organizer Jeremy Juliano of Galactic Greg's.
The Indianapolis event is held over four days, but Valparaiso's will be a more modest one-day convention from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. -- or later, if the game action demands, Juliano said.
He said he hopes to attract more than 100 gamers to the convention to play card and other table games, like Magic: The Gathering, which Juliano said is one of the most popular card games in the industry and often attracts 50 players to Galactic Greg's for an evening.
Other games to be featured at Galacti-Con include Heroclix, a kind of superhero chess game based on comic book action figures, like Superman and Batman and more than 5,000 figures, a huge rule book and different power sets and abilities to get players "as close to the source material as possible"; Pokemon, the Card Game, and Warhammer 40K, in which players build miniatures on a 4-by-8-foot landscape.
The convention is not for video gamers. All the action is based on the use of miniatures, cards and statues. Games like Warhammer 40K and Heroclix involve building miniature armies, Juliano said.
Different games will be going at different times during the day. Visiting the convention is free, but anyone wishing to play the games will have to pay for the cards or other materials they use.
