HEBRON | Cleaning up a few loose ends at the end of the year, the Town Council adopted a salary ordinance for 2013 and complied with nepotism and handicapped accessibility laws.
The salary ordinance doesn't include any raises, and it eliminated two positions from the Hebron public works department that are no longer needed, lab director and equipment operator.
In addition, the salaries for utility worker with both a sewer and a water license and a utility work with one or the other were lowered to reflect a lower level of experience from previous years.
The public works director is the highest paid town employee at $54,590 a year followed by the police chief at $53,045. The town council salary remains at $6,000 a year while the clerk-treasurer receives a total of $38,000.
The council approved a statement that it will comply with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act in not discriminating against those with disabilities. The town did a self-assessment and found all the government buildings are in compliance with the ADA but a couple of parking lots that were repaved have to be restriped to mark the handicapped slots.
The action was needed by year's end for the town to be eligible for federal funds. Clerk-Treasurer Terri Waywood said the town doesn't anticipate needing any federal funds but supports the need to provide accessibility to everyone.
Approving the nepotism certification means the town can have its budgets approved by the state Department of Local Government Finance in the future. The state law was changed earlier this year prohibiting anyone hired after July 1 from being under the direct supervision of a relative. Anyone hired before that date is exempt.
