Just months from college graduation, Hebron resident Emily Keene is catching the attention of her academic community at Lewis University.

The Lewis University student was honored by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois during the annual Student Laureate Convocation on Nov. 3, held in Springfield. She was recognized for excellence in academic and extracurricular activities among all four-year college seniors in Illinois.

“I was blown away with the honor and recognition from my university. I have always taken opportunities to learn new things from activities and people I meet, never anticipating or expecting such an award for what I do on a daily basis,” she said.

Keene, a 2009 Boone Grove High School graduate, is studying business administration and marketing at Lewis University’s Romeoville campus. She plans to pursue a managerial position or work as a professional marketing coordinator.

“After an internship this previous summer, I ran my own small business. I found my knack in sales and marketing and thoroughly enjoyed spending my time with customers to make them happy,” she said.

“I would work with them through the end of the job and the satisfaction of finishing a job from start to finish with a happy customer in the end was such a rewarding experience.”

Keene serves as senior vice president of the professional business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi, and has won numerous awards as a member of the Catholic honor society Delta Epsilon Sigma.

In addition to maintaining a 3.6 grade point average and dean’s list status, Keene is a member of the Art Club and the women’s track and field team.

“I try and keep the broad perspective in mind every day, which is often difficult, and keep very important life lessons at hand from my biggest supporters,” she said.
