VALPARAISO | A Jan. 6 hearing has been set on a request for email, cellphone and Facebook messages posted by the wife of a Hobart firefighter before her husband drove a van into their house Tuesday and wound up hospitalized this week.

It is believed those messages might be helpful in the defense of John Wall, 48, of 617-4 West 650 South, said Wall's attorney, Bob Harper.

Harper argues for a quick resolution to the matter considering the short life of emails and Facebook posts. He also said there may be need for law enforcement to aid in the acquisition of the electronic information.

Police said after Wall drove the van into the house, which is near Hebron, the crash sparked a fire and Wall told officers, "Just shoot me," before climbing back into the burning vehicle.

Wall was badly burned and was on a breathing tube and sedated Friday at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill., Harper said. Wall reportedly was in the process of undergoing several skin graft surgeries.

Harper said he has been unable to talk to Wall because of Wall's condition. Wall was unable to appear for a hearing Friday before Porter Superior Court Judge Roger Bradford on charges of criminal confinement, pointing a firearm and various other counts stemming from an alleged confrontation with his wife.

Harper said he expects further charges to be filed.
