HEBRON | Two people escaped unharmed from a fire Monday afternoon that destroyed their home.

Hebron Fire Chief Chad Franzman said his department was called just before 12:30 p.m. to a house fire at 835 S. County Road 500 West, just east of the town.

Firefighters found the home fully engulfed in flames.

Franzman said nine other fire departments were called to help fight the fire and to shuttle water to the scene.

Franzman said the two residents of the home, a retired couple, were at home when the fire started, but were not injured. Two cats died in the fire, he said.

Franzman said the roof of the home collapsed into the second floor, and the second floor then collapsed into the the first floor.

The home is a total loss, Franzman said. He said the residents will stay with relatives in Lake County.

Porter County Red Cross assisted the couple at the scene and provided help to the firefighters.

The Porter County Fire Investigative Strike Team was called to help determine the cause, but the cause of fire had not been determined as of Monday night, he said.
