HAMMOND | A Hebron man accused of illegally acquiring Social Security funds has reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors.
Richard Dickus, 71, pleaded guilty to one count of embezzling Social Security funds, admitting he received $217,996 in benefits belonging to his mother upon her death in April 1991 up until November 2013, court records stated. He admitted he failed to notify the Social Security Administration his mother died, and took receipt of the payments in his personal account and that of his deceased step-father.
Dickus faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He must also make restitution for the amount of money illegally obtained. A sentencing date is yet to be set.
