HEBRON | The Boone Township school board recognized the Hebron High School band at its meeting Tuesday evening.

The board congratulated band members for their participation in the Indiana State School Music Association contest at Valparaiso High School Jan. 26.

Superintendent George Letz announced that the middle school received the gift of a xylophone, valued at $3,000, from Cheryl and David Megremis. The instrument was present in the board room, and two students treated the group to a performance of Coldplay’s "Viva La Vida" and "Clocks."

The board approved a grant from Target for $700 for a field trip to the Visual and Performing Arts Center in Munster and a monetary donation from Jennifer Mantai, the parent of an elementary student, for the Hebron Elementary Athletics.

Letz reported that Shauna Findlay, formerly with the Indiana Department of Education, continues to review the district’s curriculum to help students prepare for the common core standards.

“We have made this commitment for a whole year with Dr. Findlay, and she has helped us to look at the new common core standards and make this transition,” said Letz. “This has made the transition so much easier and better than if we were doing it on our own.”

James Martin, Hebron Elementary School principal, said Findlay is also helping with reading textbook adoption.

“I think we’re getting closer already,” said Martin. “We hope to adopt a textbook sooner than normal, maybe in April so that teachers will have the books before they leave in June.”

Martin said there are 555 students at the elementary school.

“This year has been a good year because normally we lose some as the year goes on,” said Martin.
