HEBRON | A bright, sunny winter day greeted folks who ventured out for a day of fun at Winterfest on Saturday.

Although the weather was too warm for ice skating on the town rink, festival organizer Mike Reick said nearly 300 children and 100 adults attended the festivities.

Reick said the Hebron Redevelopment Commission hosts the event, now in its ninth year, to get folks out of the house in the dead of winter.

“We’ve grown from 30 kids to what we’ve got now,” he said.

Children competed at indoor games at the middle school, including sack and three-legged races, a basketball shoot, a volleyball toss, and a coloring contest. Little kids enjoyed the bouncy house and riding in Little Obie, a scale model Canadian National train.

Reick said contest prizes included and iDock and MP3 players.

“Every kid will get one or two prizes,” said Reick, who also noted that local eatery Pav’s donated hot dogs and chips, while Dairy Queen supplied drinks.

Students from Hebron Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society helped organize and run the event.

“We couldn’t have done it without them,” said Reick.

Honor society members Samantha Molchan and Bailey Jones took a break from their duties and danced to the XBox game Just Dance 4.

Blonde ponytail bouncing, Molchan sang the lyrics and followed along perfectly to Carrie Underwood’s “Good Girl” and Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger.”

“We have a Wii at home,” said Molchan, who acknowledged she has practiced her moves. “I’ve done it a lot … I’m not exactly sure how many times.”

Jones said the girls enjoy helping at the event each year.

“We have fun with the little kids,” said Jones. “I love little kids and its fun hanging out with them.”
