PORTER TOWNSHIP | A Lake Eliza-area man was hospitalized and later arrested for alleged drug-related offenses after being found Friday afternoon unconscious in the street.

Porter County sheriff's officers and medics were called about 12:15 p.m. Friday near Del Mar Court and Hollywood Drive, where neighbors reported an unconscious man lying in the middle of the street.

An officer said Dustin Sandberg, 24, of Porter Township, was extremely pale, had a faint heartbeat and was gasping for air. The officer said at one point he believed Sandberg had stopped breathing.

Officers said they found eight hypodermic needles underneath the man and to his side, along with a number of anti-anxiety pills, a glass pipe and an aluminum can with burn markings on the bottom.

Police said there was blood on the man's forearm, near his elbow.

Medics reportedly injected Sandberg with Narcan, a substance known to counter the effects of a heroin overdose, and transported him to Porter hospital.

Police said after about four hours of observation and treatment, the man was discharged and taken to Porter County Jail, where he faces charges for alleged possession of hypodermic needles, drugs and paraphernalia.
