HEBRON | Ray, 59, hopes he can one day be more mobile.
He has a lot of health issues that limit him, including diabetes, COPD, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure and depression. Ray could use a lift chair to help him get up and moving more.
Ray hopes to receive a lift chair through the Christmas for the Elderly program.
The Visiting Nurse Association and The Times Media Co. jointly sponsor the Christmas for the Elderly charity program which has raised more than $550,000 in the past 25 years. This money helps improve quality of lives for Porter County residents.
Ray also receives other services through the VNA including a nurse who come in and checks on him.
"Before I got sick, I was a trucker and had my own rig," Ray said. "But now I have so many health issues including neuropathy so I can't drive now."
Ray had to stop working at age 44. But if he moves around more that will help his conditions.
The VNA is accepting donations to help. The Times will publish profiles in Porter County editions about seniors who benefit from the community's financial support.
The VNA is a nonprofit home health agency licensed by the state.
Resident donations and United Way funding allow the agency to provide care a reduced rate.
