HEBRON | The Humane Society is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for killing a Hebron dog.

The dog, named Pearl, was chained to a tree and stepped into a wild animal trap intentionally set close by, according to police.

The dog's owner said Pearl was put on the chain in the morning and, shortly thereafter, was discovered bleeding from the mouth with her head pinched in the trap.

Police believe the trap was intentionally set and likely baited to lure the dog.

"It takes a calculated and exceedingly callous person to set a trap and lure a friendly family dog to it, knowing that the only outcome for the animal is a prolonged and grisly death," Anne Sterling, Indiana state director for The Humane Society of the United States said in a statement issued Wednesday. "We are hopeful that this reward will bring forward anyone with information about this tragic crime."

Police are asking anyone with information on the case to contact Hebron Police Chief Steven Sibbrell at (219) 996-2747.
