PORTAGE | The Porter County Hispanic Assembly will sponsor the second annual Scholarship and Legacy Awards Banquet in observance of Hispanic Heritage Month in September.

The banquet will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 26 at Duneland Falls Banquet Center on Ind 149.

PCHA will present seven local residents with award honors for their personal excellence and contributions to the Hispanic community, including the winner of the PCHA Scholarship Award to a college student for the 2013-14 fall semester.

"We are pleased that we can recognize these individuals for their achievements," said Victoria Salinas Gresham, founder and president of the Porter County Hispanic Assembly. "It’s important to support their efforts so that more Latinos are encouraged to participate in community service."

The scholarship application is open to a Hispanic/Latino traditional or adult student registered either full time or part time with a minimum of six credit hours to an Indiana college or university. A minimum cumulative 2.5 grade point average is required to qualify.

Deadline to apply for the scholarship award is Aug. 24; applications must be received by 11:30 p.m. that date.

Nominations for the Hispanic Legacy Awards are open to individuals of Hispanic and non-Hispanic descent, and must show how they made a significant impact within the Hispanic/Latino community. Categories include the prestigious Legacy Award, Life Achievement Award, Veteran of Valor Award and Business Entrepreneur Award.

This year PCHA will add two new categories, a Public Service Award and Citizen Award to honor those who have served the community or volunteered their time with dedication and commitment.

Nominations for the awards will be accepted until Sept. 7 by 11:30 p.m.

All applications are listed on the website at portercountyhispanicassembly.org. The online forms are located under the events tab.

The Scholarship and Legacy Awards banquet is open to the public. Music will be provided by Trios Los Romanticos. Tickets are available at $35 per person in advance. For more details, contact Gresham at (219) 649-1280.
