PORTER | Indiana Dunes Tourism selected 32 nonprofit organizations, schools and government agencies to receive $45,135 in grant money to help promote festivals and events, sporting competitions, conferences and other tourism-related projects during 2013.

The goal of the grant program is to provide funding for events, activities and programs that grow tourism in Porter County, said Lorelei Weimer, executive director of Indiana Dunes Tourism.

Grants were awarded to: AAU Track & Field event, $900; ARTour, $450; Chesterton Art Fair, $1,350; Fall Harvest Festival & Antique Equipment Show, $675; Gardening Show, $1,350; Institute of Liturgical Studies conference, $1,350; Kouts Christmas Open House, $1,260; Valparaiso University Jazz Fest, $1,350; Bark in the Park, $900; Taste of Duneland, $900; Aukiki River Festival, $1,350; Chesterton Wizard of Oz Festival, $1,350; Treasures of the Past Antique & Collectible Show, $675; Chesterton/Duneland Chamber Fireworks , $675; Northern Amateur Golf, $900; Earth Day Celebration, $900; Chesterton Speech and Debate, $450; Hebron Block Party/Hebron Winter Fest, $1,800; Orville Redenbacher statue, $2,250; Portage Township Summerfest, $2,250; Youth Soccer Clinic, $1,350; Shakespeare in the Park, $1,800; Chesterton/Duneland Chamber of Commerce European Market, $1,800; Winter Snow Show, $900; Banquet and Facility Promotion, $1,800; Jens Jensen documentary, $2,700; Family Cancer Awareness Day, $900; Lorie’s Ride, $1,350; Lutheran Basketball Association, $2,700; Elvis FANtasy Fest, $2,700; Hooked on Art Festival, $1,350; Elite Basketball Tournaments, $2,700.

The grants can be used for things such as advertising, printing and promotional expenses that bring visitors to Porter County and encourage overnight stays.

The funds can also be used by municipalities and nonprofit organizations to develop brochures, websites and other tools that encourage visitation.
