VALPARAISO | Porter County officials are attempting to head off another dispute over their appointment to the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority.
The Porter County Council tabled its recommendation Monday night, citing the desire to improve its relationship with the Porter County Board of Commissioners.
Newly appointed Council President Jeremy Rivas, D-2nd, said he has spoken with Commissioner President John Evans, R-North, and they agreed to discuss the appointment before putting the shared decision up for a vote.
Two applicants are seeking the RDA appointment - Republican Jeffrey Good, who has held the post the past two years and former Democratic Valparaiso Mayor David Butterfield.
Good, a hotelier, wrote on his application he would like to be reappointed because he is "up to speed on on the issues and challenges that are in the future of the RDA."
Good said he is qualified because he has owned a business for 17 years and is well versed in development. He also cited his experience in tourism and with a private real estate investment trust.
Butterfield, who works as an attorney and had served as mayor for 20 years, said he would like to be appointed because he has had strong interest in economic development for his entire career. He said he started the economic development commission and the redevelopment commission in Valparaiso.
Both men said on their applications they have no potential conflicts of interest.
